I solved this in a way that sounded scary but turned out to be trivial. I am running my old XP installation under windows 7 in a Virtual machine. Am actually using VMplayer from VMware. If you have an enhanced edition of windows 7 you may be able to use 'Xp mode' for this purpose. It took me about 2 hours to set up a VM, and now I can run my old machine under windows 7. The scanner works just as it did before.

I wanted to post this because I was amazed how easy it was to run my old computer on my new computer, and the integration is really seamless.
