Ethno World 5 Professional & Voices by Best Service is a Virtual Instrument Audio Plugin. It includes, and is therefore 'powered by', Kontakt Player, which.

I'm using MOTU Ethno Instrument, Quantum Leap RA, and Ethno World 3 for my ethnic sounds, as well as EMU Planet Earth on occasion (OMG HARDWARE!!!!) Each library has strengths and weaknesses. I like the loops includes with MOTU, they are either midi files or audio files you drag and drop in a track and sync to tempo. I like RA (same quality of samples as East West libraries) as you can do keyswitching to achieve different articulations. Ethno World rounds things out with different instruments. Ethno World is about to be version 4 and it appears to includes loops, both melodic and rhythmic (like MOTU) with 10 gigs of content. The engine is Kontact 2 player and based on info on Best Service website you will be able to change the pitch of the melodic loops.

(very cool) as well as the tempo of the rhythmic loops. In MOTU you have to find a loop and determine the key and write around the handful loops that may fit your track.

MOTU also doesn't play with Sonar very well and seemingly all the time. ( I don't know if it's the dongle thing or not) I've had no trouble with the Native Instrument playback wrapper in RA and Ethno World 3. There should be alot of info on their respective websites about the instruments etc. Than can be helpful in making a decision.

Thank you ALL. I love this forum. I'm scared of the ILOK as well.

My midi controler and sound card are both USB. I'd hate it if another USB device caused any latency issues. Instead of hijacking my own thread, I think I'll do some searching around for ILOK threads.

I'll try over in EastWest's forum as well. I'm guessing there's been a LOT of discussion in the past. Thanks for the info concerning the quality of the sounds. Nataljya onufrieva bogi soshedshie s nebes. From the demos, they sound pretty good.

That said, I'd buy RA if I had the choice because I'm crazy about EVERY EastWest library I already have, but money's tight and Ethno is cheaper. And the Christmas season is coming up. And it's hard writing a good Christmas piece without a great Celtic instrument or two.

So, do I buy Ethno now (just have the cash) or do I wait until I've enough for RA and maybe miss out when I'm in the 'Christmas' mood? Again, I appreciate all of your input! Anyone else have/use Ethno? Maybe someone who uses BOTH Ethno and RA?

ORIGINAL: Monkey23 I don't really have a problem with ilok. It's my only program with it so it's not too bothersome. Is there something I'm missing? I actually look at it from the opposite point of view: Why, when no one else I use makes me use this d**n usb key, do I have to keep up with it on my laptop when I'm going to the coffee shop to kill some time and work on a tune?

What a complete waste of time and effort on so many levels. I won't do them anymore, regardless of how great this or that might be. But again, apologies.

There is, however, something I WILL do: I will sometimes buy things with copy protection schemes that I don't like, and create a sample library from it. Or a loop library. Then, I take the library, NOT the dongled app/plugin. Ethno, from what I read and hear, might be something to look at for this. I won't do them anymore, regardless of how great this or that might be. It is me who should apologize for getting off topic but I thank you for your perspective. I never thought of it that way. To get back on topic I will say to the OP and anyone else interested in getting this program that overall I am happy with it.

I find it very unstable (see post above) and I also find that some of the instruments are a little skimpy on samples. For example many of the instruments (especially the percussive ones) are limited to about five keys only! A whole keyboard to fill up with sounds and they give you only 5 keys to work with! That's very disappointing! I'm still glad I bought it though and I've written two pieces that I consider to be amongst my best that were inspired and created using this program.
